Fed: Australia now less equal, less fair" Beazley
Federal Opposition leader KIM BEAZLEY says Australia has become a less equitable nation
during the past year.
He blames the decline in fairness on the changes to the tax system introduced by the
HOWARD government in July.
He says the only thing which could have increased fairness, taxation changes to family
trusts, is now fatally compromised.
Mr BEAZLEY says the tax burden has shifted massively onto middle Australia.
And, he says the economic prospects for the coming year are also gloomy, with predictions
that the economy is going into a slowdown.
The opposition leader says education in Australia is also less fair now because it
discriminates against the majority of students who go to public schools.
Yet, Mr BEAZLEY says, education, and the knowledge nation, are the only remedy to return
Australia to the healthy rate of productivity it previously enjoyed.
Mr BEAZLEY was giving the reply at the Whitlam Lecture which this year was given by
New Zealand Attorney-General and Labour Minster MARGARET WILSON.
