Fed: ACTU says Australians will fight to defend Medicare

The ACTU says three-quarters of Australian workers are prepared to forego a tax cutto fund health and education.

And ACTU president SHARAN BURROW says 69 per cent believe the only way to preservebulk-billing is to pay a higher Medicare levy.

Ms BURROW has told the Seven Network Medicare is critical and Australians are preparedto fight for it.

She's stopped short of saying the ACTU will push for the 30 per cent private healthinsurance rebate to be dropped.

But she says that when there's not enough funding for public hospitals and bulk-billing,a rebate for the wealthy is not the priority.

She says Opposition Leader SIMON CREAN has committed to defend and extend Medicareand bring back bulk-billing -- something she says Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD is pathologicallyopposed to.
